Mia Gardner, LCSW, Child and Family Specialist
Introduction by LeShelle Woodard, PhD
CEO, Lead Clinician
We are thrilled to introduce you to our newest team member! Mia Gardner is like breath of fresh air. Since joining us six months ago, Mia has brought a level of energy and enthusiasm that is contagious. As our child and family specialist, Mia connects seamlessly in meeting the needs of our youngest clients and their families. Mia is also, in this writer’s opinion, the most ambitious member of our team. So, it should be no surprise that it was Mia who lit the fuse for our latest endeavor. During a team discussion she declared that she believed we should add essential oils to our offerings at LEP. The idea was novel and took root. We now have a custom line of essential oil synergies that we’re calling Life Enhancement Essentials AKA, LE Essentials.
As we developed LE Essentials, Mia was nowhere near finished. In fact, she was out trailblazing by setting up and promoting her personal platform, Sincerely Your Therapist. I suspect, that this platform is just the beginning for Mia Gardner. We all should be prepared to see and hear much more from her as part of the LEP team and her own self-made venues.
Meet Mia Gardner
Tell us a little about your background.
I am originally from New Jersey, went to college in Connecticut, then I ended up in Massachusetts where I stayed after completing my Masters. I played soccer my whole life, through college where I played Division 1. I was passionate about sports. Some other ones I took part in include lacrosse, horseback riding, volleyball, and karate. I am from big Greek and Italian families who love lots of good food and dancing. I am the oldest of two half-sisters, a half-brother, and a step-brother. I have always been a big animal lover and recently acquired my own fur-baby (puppy) named Tyson.
What do you like most about your work at Life Enhancement Psychotherapy?
Working with amazing, dedicated clients in a safe space is at the top of my list. Being able to provide support and insight to others who are wanting it is what I saw for myself. I enjoy having the creative freedom to work with not just the clients in the most helpful way for them, but also harnessing other ideas within the company. It has been wonderful being part of a group who are open to anything!
What motivated you to become a psychotherapist who specializes in children and families?
Both personal and professional experiences led to me being a therapist and more specifically wanting to specialize in children and families. I was highly interested in the field beginning in high school after taking my first psychology class, and always knew I wanted to be in a helping profession. I wanted to be the one people, especially children, could talk to when they didn’t know who they could share their tough times with because of some experiences in my own childhood. In order to fully serve children, family work is also necessary. I come from a fun yet complex family background which made doing family work seem like a natural calling.
Who is your favorite role model? Why?
I have always idolized Mia Hamm. Not just because we share the same name and love of the same sport, but because she was a dominant female figure who wasn’t afraid to play with the boys. She always pushed herself to make herself the best she could be, as well as everyone around her. I very much appreciated that and held onto that idea growing up, on and off the field.
On the Life Enhancement website, you identify Princess Jasmine as your favorite Disney character. Why?
Ah yes. I love that she is not afraid to take control and demand respect! I also love that she has a pet tiger! I mean, how epic is that?
What is Sincerely Your Therapist? Why did you create the platform?
As a therapist, when I told friends, family, and peers what I do for a living, I received the same reaction consistently, “Good for you, I don’t know how you do it!” It got me thinking about how I continue to “do it” in a field that is full of burnout. Sincerely Your Therapist started as a personal blog where I would talk about the importance of self-care, self-esteem, and self-love. I would also share some of my favorite ways to engage in these things in order to take care of myself. It grew into a brand that offers motivation, support, and the space to bring like-minded people together.
What are you passionate about? Why?
I am passionate about living life to the fullest, pursuing dreams that may even seem too big, and making time for what you love. I am passionate about my work, but also make it a point to be passionate about the things I spend my time doing outside of work. Some of these things include spending time with loved ones, traveling, writing, sports, and more!
What advice do you have for young people who might be trying to figure out their identity or passion in life?
Pay more attention to how you want to feel and what you want your life to look like. By understanding what you want for yourself (not what your friend or someone else wants!), that will lead you in the direction of where you need to be or what you should be doing. Don’t be afraid to ask for things, but remember you will also need to work for them! Be honest with yourself about what you want as well. Putting a filter on it will only hurt you.
Is there anything else you want our Life Enhancement Family to know about you?
I am thrilled to be in a setting where I get to work with you all. This work is truly something I love. I dedicate my time to becoming the best therapist I can be through continued education, trainings, networking, and more. I will also continue working on creating different outlets where people can access me and my work.
